As a sculpture studio known for bronze statues, many people think of Cherrylion Studios as metal workers, which we are not. Our custom sculptures are constructed in clay and we don’t produce any of the bronze process. We thought we’d clarify our creative process and clue you in on how our sculptures go from a ball of clay to the bronze apple of a clients’ eye.

The Original Statue is Sculpted from Clay Over a Steel Armature

Our custom bronze sculptures begin as a concept from our clients. Once we’ve established a clear vision for the piece being commissioned, we sculpt the original sculpture in clay over a steel armature. This framework allows for maximum malleability as we receive thorough feedback from each client.

The Final Clay Sculpture is Made into a Mold at Our Studio in Atlanta, GA

Once this clay sculpture meets our clients, approval, it’s placed in the well-trained hands of Cherrylion Studios’ mold maker. The clay is painted with several layers of liquid rubber that cures before being covered with plaster. This mold is then removed from the clay sculpture in sections and shipped to a bronze foundry. The original clay structure is destroyed after the mold is removed.

Cherrylion Studios has established trusted relationships with some of the best bronze foundries in the business to maintain the quality our clients and their sculptures deserve. These foundries use a lost-wax process to reproduce a hollow cast of each section of the custom sculpture. Once these sections are reconfigured precisely, they’re welded and chased together to complete the piece.
